Tennessee Governor Opposes Sports Betting But Passes Bill to Legalize

The State of Tennessee Could Be the Next State to Legalize Sports Betting

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee allowed for the sports betting bill to pass without signature after he made it clear he was opposed to expanding gambling activities in the state especially sports betting activities. He said he doesn’t believe that online sports betting is best for his state but is letting is pass through. Senate Bill 0016 will allow online and remote kiosk permit wagering in the state. The bill is scheduled to go into effect on July 1st of this year.

SB0016 cleared the House last month with a vote of 51-40. The bill passed had to pass through the state Senate before reaching the house, and it did with a 20-12 vote in favor of. The newly revised bill replaced HB0001 after the House corresponded with several amendments.

Governor Less said in a statement, “I am letting House Bill 0001 become law without my signature. I do not believe the expansion of gambling through online sports betting is in the best interest of our state, but I do appreciate the General Assembly’s efforts to remove brick and mortar establishments.”
