The Gambling Commission has today announced new rules which online operators must follow to make gambling safer and fairer.
The new rules, which follow an open consultation, will ensure operators verify customers’ age and identity details faster which will benefit consumers.
The new implementations will benefit all consumers and make it safer f or children. Before the new rules, online operators were allowed up to 72 hours to perform their id and age verification, but now all players cannot withdraw their winnings until the verification is complete. If any player is found to be underage all stakes must be returned.
The UKGC is also ordering operators to complete the verification process before players can play free-to-play games. This is to protect children and underage playing. Although there is no real money involved with free or practice games, the same concept of real money play is there, because it’s the same games that real money wagers can be made.
Also, operators must now verify each players’ name, address, date of birth and request any other additional verification if prompted. This is to ensure that all players are being treated equally and all necessary steps are being taken to ensure each individual players’ identity is accurate. The new rules are to be enforced starting May 7th.
